Start and run the equipment if at all possible. Listen for unusual noises, check for warning lights, test hydraulics, and engage any major systems before agreeing to buy.
Confirm the seller has clear title and the ability to transfer ownership. Verify that serial numbers on the machine match any documentation provided.
Do Your Homework
The answer often tells you something useful — upgrading, downsizing, retiring, or transitioning operations are all legitimate reasons. Vague or evasive answers deserve follow-up.
Major engine, transmission, or structural repairs aren't automatically disqualifying — but knowing about them lets you price accordingly and understand the machine's history.
If you plan to finance the purchase, knowing whether the seller works with financing partners — or whether you need to arrange your own — affects your timeline and negotiating position.
Don't Overlook the Details
Two things buyers often underestimate: the cost and complexity of moving large equipment, and how long financing approval can take.
If the equipment is being transported, get a clear understanding of who is responsible for arranging and paying for trucking before you finalize the deal. Equipment transport costs vary significantly by distance and equipment size.
If you're financing, start the process early. Having pre-approval or a financing relationship in place before you find the right piece means you can move quickly when it matters.
